Les Points Forts The Elephant Heard Camp Jabulani's herd has matured over time to become a very close knit family group. They each have their own character, and just like a human family, have unique bonds with one another. Since the arrival of Limpopo in 2006, three additional babies have joined the Camp Jabulani herd - Klaserie, Zindoga and Mambo. While wild elephants group themselves in matriarchal herds, with male bull elephants joining the herds from time to time and having little to do with the younger members - Camp Jabulani's herd are all involved. The Stables The elephants' stables are a sight to behold. Constructed in just a few weeks, the stables were specially prepared for the herd of elephants when they were transported from Zimbabwe. Large, spacious and completely open-air, each elephant has its own stable (babies share with their mothers). Stables are immaculately cleaned each and every day, and troughs in each of the enclosures are refilled. A particular treat is when the orange truck pulls in! The Caregivers We have a total of 42 team members taking care of the elephant herd - including 28 grooms, 11 stable hands, the elephant master, a dedicated ranger and a manager taking care of the tourism element of the operation. The grooms are dedicated to these elephants evident in their gentle yet firm approach to their charges. Most of the team originate from Zimbabwe, as did the elephants (with the exception of Jabulani and the babies, of course). |
